How to Clean a Copper Water Bottle (Without Damaging It)

    Last updated: July 2026

Copper water bottles are naturally self-cleaning and rarely need washing, because copper kills bacteria on contact. When you do want to deep clean clean one, use simple natural methods: rinse the inside with lemon juice, a salt-and-lemon mix, or a splash of vinegar to remove tarnish, and clean the outside with copper polish or toothpaste. Occasionally rinse with warm water or a mild soap. Never use a dishwasher, as it can damage the copper.

    Copper is self-cleaning

The first thing to know is that a copper bottle needs very little cleaning. Copper is naturally antimicrobial and self-cleaning, killing bacteria on its own, which is one of the main reasons people love it. It is far less work than a stainless steel bottle. You do not need to clean it daily, or even weekly.

Cleaning tarnish (only when you want to)

Over time you may see dark spots or a color change inside. This is harmless tarnish, not mold or dirt, and it does not affect the bottle. Clean it only if you want the shine back:

    • Inside: swirl a little lemon juice, a salt-and-lemon mix, or some vinegar, then rinse.
    • Outside: use a copper polish, or a dab of toothpaste, for a quick shine.

    Occasional rinsing

Every once in a while, if you like, rinse the bottle with warm water, or wash gently with a mild soap. That is more than enough. Only water should ever go inside the bottle, which keeps it clean in the first place.
